About the Horses

Horses and humans have descended from a prehistoric era and our paths have crossed many times on different continents.  Horses are very much like humans, except purer and unspoiled by time and possessions. They are compassionate and caring individuals who like to be around their own kind and build certain lifelong bonds with others.    

Each spring in the far Northwest corner of Colorado near the borders of Utah and Wyoming, 600-800 horses are rounded up from several thousand acres where they have been living and wandering free for the winter.  They are brought together for a 60-mile journey to the home ranch. Once there they get ready for their summer job.  These horses will be shipped to the finest dude ranches across the state.  They get to meet new people, and work with the handicapped, children and the elderly from around the world.  At the end of the summer, they will return to their friends and the freedom of the high planes.  Many of these horses have been making the trip for years; they look forward to the journey and its rewards.

I have had the wonderful opportunity to join these horses and be accepted to ride amongst them for several years now and try to capture the fee sprit and their feelings for humanity in my photographs.  It’s all about the horses.

In some of these photographs the horses are resting at noon reacquainting themselves with old friends whom they may not have seen all winter but will be traveling with again for the summer.  Many of these photographs have been taken from horse back.
